ナイチンゲールの生き方を変えるきっかけとなった事件。
その場所に一緒にいたのは、小説家 針 ネズミ先生だった。
針先生は、ハリネズミだ。
これがかなりの変わり者だ。
表面上のお仕事としては小説家なのだが、
似顔絵を描いてみたり、冒険をしてみたり、と自由気ままなのだ。
自由に過ごすな割には、自分というものへの誇りなのか、こだわりが強く、思い込みが激しい。
そして、かなりの頑固ものだ。
しかし、彼女にとっては、針先生は両親の命の恩人であり、不思議と気が合う部分もあったので、
彼との縁は長く続いた。
針先生は意外におしゃべりだった。
似顔絵を描かせてくれ、と訪ねてきたり、
冒険に出かけては、その冒険の話をしに訪ねてきたり。
彼女にとっては、来ないで欲しい時もあったが、引きつった笑顔で迎え入れた。
そんなある日、針先生が興奮した面持ちで急に訪ねてきた。
「我輩は目撃した！…モップが歩いてたんだよ！いや、あれはマンモスだったのかな…」
彼女は今日も引きつった笑顔だった。
針先生は嘘、というか、話を大きくする癖がある。
そこらへんは、やはり小説家だ。
「でも、すぐに見失ってしまったのだ…」
彼女は勉学に励んでいた時だったので、早く話を切り上げたかった。
今すぐ行けば、また、見つかるかも。と促し、針先生を玄関へと送った。
針先生は、自慢の髭がなびくほど鼻息を荒くし、そうだ、と言わんばかりに山へと走り出した。
しばらく、針先生は訪れてこなかった。
多少の罪悪感を抱えながら、彼女は勉学に励んでいた。
目が見にくくなり、彼女は眼鏡をかけることになった。
そんな中、久しぶりに針先生が訪ねてきた。
「ナイチンゲールくん、久しぶりだね。」
針先生は疲れている。
「実は、あれから、モップマンモスは一度も見えない。しかし、薄っぺらの幻の鳥は見たのだ。
それも一度きりだった…すぐに見えなくなってしまったのだ…それからは全く…」
彼女は、微笑みながら頷く。
がっくりとうなだれる針先生。
「あれ、ナイチンゲールくん、それは？」
眼鏡を指す針先生。
目が見えにくくなってしまい…と説明するや否や、針先生の顔の曇りが晴れる。
「そうか、我輩の目が悪かったのか！それは気づかなんだ！だから、いるはずのものが見えないのか。」
針先生は思い込みが激しいのだ。
「なるほど、なるほど。いや、ナイチンゲールくん、邪魔したね！」
そう言って針先生は姿を見せなくなった…
時は経ち、看護師になったナイチンゲールはいろいろな噂を耳にする。
眼鏡をかけていない眼鏡行商がいる話。
その眼鏡行商は、商売人なのに、態度が横柄だという話。
「我輩は」が口癖で、自分の話ばかりをする話。
ナイチンゲールは、微笑ましくその話に耳を傾けていた。
